Locality

The Christiana mine reaches down to the sea level and even a little beneath.

The shaft that served the mine had two loading docks, one at an elevation of 85 m and one at 5 m above sea level.

The shaft itself was built at an elevation of 132.64 m above sea level.

According to company policy of the “Compagnie Française des Mines du Laurium” (C.F.M.L.) which sunk the shaft, this exact elevation is that of the axle of the main wheel of the shaft.

This is also the reason why locality designations like “Christiana 132” or “Shaft 132” have become popular in the literature and among collectors.

These designations are actually not correct, as the shaft was called “Puits Christiana” (Engl.: Shaft Christiana) by the C.F.M.L. without any numbers attached.

This mine and the Hilarion mine are co-type localities for zincowoodwardite.
